How to sign a PDF without printing it
Updated: 2026-10-14
Printing a document only to sign it, scan it and send it back takes ten minutes and a printer. You can sign the PDF directly instead, on a computer or a phone.
Sign in three steps
- Open Sign PDF and drop the document on the page.
- Create your signature: draw it with a mouse or your finger, type your name in a handwriting font, or upload a photo of your signature.
- Click the page where the signature goes, drag it into place, resize it from the corner, then export the signed PDF.
You can place several signatures, for example initials on every page, add a typed date next to your name, and move between pages before exporting.
For the neatest uploaded signature, sign on plain white paper with a dark pen and take the photo in daylight, straight on. A PNG with a transparent background looks best.
Is a signature added this way legally valid?
In many countries, yes, for most everyday documents. In the United States, the ESIGN Act and state laws give electronic signatures the same legal effect as handwritten ones for most contracts. In the European Union, the eIDAS regulation says an electronic signature can't be rejected as evidence just because it's electronic.
There are exceptions. Wills, some family-law and court documents, and certain property transactions often need a handwritten signature, a witness or a notary. Some organizations also require a specific e-signature service that records who signed and when. If the document matters, ask the other side what they accept. Keep it private
Contracts and forms often contain addresses, ID numbers and bank details. The signing tool runs in your browser, so the document isn't uploaded anywhere. To stop others reading the signed PDF, add an open password with Protect PDF before you send it, and share the password separately.
